DRBC Behavior Evaluation and Training
Every dog that comes to DRBC receives an evaluation by our experienced staff. Most have come to us through no fault of their own and need little intervention by our trainers, but for those that do, help is given. Here are some of the most common concerns of potential adopters and the DRBC approach to these issues:
- House-training: Many doxies come to us already house-trained and this is a point every foster home works to maintain and improve prior to the adoption process; however, trained and trained to the adopters home are two different issues. Be prepared to do some work in this area, but know that we are here to help.
- Children: Many of our doxies have been abused by children; we can't change that. We are highly aware and share this fact with all adopters. Remember, dogs are good with children IF children are good with dogs. This means supervision for both.
- Cats: DRBC has a few foster homes with cats, but cannot guarantee that your adopting doxie will get along with your cat immediately. Time, patience, and a little guidance are usually all it will take to help the adopter through this process. Have a cat? Tell us, we will do our best to find a doxie that is cat friendly.
- Biters: A known biter will not be shown in the adoption process. Doxies that come to DRBC with a history of biting receive special evaluation and training from our friends/trainers at Camp Bow Wow. The organization is committed to helping all doxies back to a sound state of mental health.
- Obedience Commands: DRBC is not a formal training group, but we recognize the importance of training for all of our charges. Each home works with our foster dogs, teaching commands that help them fit in best during their brief stay in their home. The list of vocabulary they know and have learned is shared when the doxie finds a new home.
Remember, DRBC remains a life-long resource for all of our doxies and even helps those that have not gone through our process. The organization is committed to a positive, leadership-centered approach to training. Should training become an issue, we are only a phone call or email away.
